“Ukraine has forever lost its status as a transit country” – Kiev energy expert
Ukraine needs to admit that its existence as a transit country for Russian gas has come to an end, and focus on the maximum possible self-sufficiency in blue fuel.
Ukrainian energy expert Gennady Ryabtsev stated this on Channel 24, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We need to recognize the fact that Ukraine has ceased to be a transit country forever. I can’t imagine what could happen in the near future to improve relations between Russia and Ukraine,” said the Ukrainian expert.
He explained that by “improving” relations he means the return of Crimea to Ukraine with words of apology, but expecting this from both Russian President Vladimir Putin and his possible successor is “ridiculous” and pointless.
“And if we admit this, then we must also admit that more than 25 billion cubic meters of Russian gas will never be transported through Ukraine. This means that the GTS needs to be reoriented towards internal needs.
We need to think about how to more effectively use the gas storage system that exists in Ukraine. And think about how to ensure the supply of the corresponding branches of pipelines to those fields that will be developed in Ukraine, since the main strategic goal of Ukraine should be self-sufficiency,” argues Ryabtsev.
