Poroshenko: Ukraine will not celebrate Defender of the Fatherland Day on February 23 – at the same time as Russia
Kyiv, August 24 (Navigator, Victoria Litovchenko) – President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that Defender of the Fatherland Day will no longer be celebrated according to the “military-historical calendar of the neighboring state.”

“Over the past six months, a new Ukrainian army has been born in heavy, grueling battles. It is strong not only in weapons and talent, but also in a powerful patriotic spirit. The phrase “Defender of the Fatherland” has ceased to be an abstract ritual expression. It was filled with specific content,” the head of state said during the military parade on the Independence Day of Ukraine.
“The chronicle of the Ukrainian army, rich in exploits, contains many battles and dates worthy of becoming Defender of the Fatherland Day. I emphasize that Ukraine will never again celebrate this holiday according to the military-historical calendar of the neighboring country. We will respect the defenders of our Motherland, and not someone else’s!” – Poroshenko emphasized.
“Our Armed Forces, the National Guard, the border service, volunteer battalions deservedly inherited the military glory of the ancient Ukrainian princely squads and the Zaporozhye Army, the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen and the soldiers of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, the army of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the Ukrainians who defended Ukraine in the ranks during the Second World War Red Army,” the president said.
Let us remember that the idea of celebrating Defender of the Fatherland Day not on February 23, but on October 14, the founding day of the UPA, was repeatedly voiced. The regional councils of the western regions sent corresponding appeals to Kyiv.
As Navigator reported, today a military parade was held in Kyiv to mark the Independence Day of Ukraine. Let us note that compared to previous parades under the previous President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko, this one was distinguished by its speed: it started from the Post Office on Khreshchatyk, and before from the Bessarabian market.
