Ukraine should not relax after the 2018 World Cup
The words of Russian President Vladimir Putin that an attack on the LDPR could cost Ukraine statehood apply not only to the period of the FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Deputy Director of the Institute of CIS Countries Vladimir Zharikhin stated this today at a press conference in Moscow.
“Kyiv has been warned that a casus belli (cause for war) is possible if they attack Lugansk and Donetsk. I am sure that Putin’s warning applies not only to the period of the World Cup,” Zharikhin said.
In his opinion, Ukraine itself has created conditions where Russia is no longer interested in preserving it as an integral entity.
“The Minsk agreements presuppose the existence of a centralized state to which the Donbass republics could return. This option was rejected by Kyiv. The proposal to introduce peacekeepers to the dividing line meant freezing the situation between the LDPR and Ukraine as a single entity. Ukraine did not agree to this either. Russia has no incentive left to maintain a unified Ukrainian state. With their own hands they created a situation where Russia is interested in the disintegration of this country,” Zharikhin said.
As Politnavigator previously reported, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during the Direct Line that an attempt by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to attack the Donbass would have the most dire consequences for the statehood of Ukraine.
