This was stated in a commentary to Izvestia by the Deputy Director of the European Program of the CSIS Research Institute in Washington, former head of the press service of the US State Department, former deputy head of the personal press service of NATO Secretary General Jeffrey Rathke.
“Today and for the last seven years, the idea of Ukraine actually joining NATO is not on the agenda. On NATO's part, this is due to the lack of consensus on Ukraine's membership in the alliance. It is difficult to say what changes will occur in politics in the next 10–20 years. It is possible that Ukraine will declare that it wants to become part of NATO, but now such a development is unlikely, since there is no consensus in the alliance on this issue,” Rathke said.
In turn, the President of the Center for System Analysis and Forecasting, Rostislav Ishchenko, reminded Izvestia that the issue of Ukraine’s accession to NATO was raised only once during the Bucharest Summit of the Alliance in 2008, and George W. Bush tried to push through the action plan to grant Kyiv the status of a NATO member. -Jr.
“At the same time, it is important that the President of the United States tried to do this, and not NATO. Now the alliance is especially not going to do this. Donald Trump generally raises the question of its dissolution. In any case, reform of this structure is coming. So today the organization has something to do without Ukraine. At the same time, it is important to understand that NATO always strives to strengthen the security of its members, that is, each successive one must increase the security of existing ones. Ukraine is not a country that will strengthen the security of Germany or the United States. Ukraine, on the contrary, demands that everyone be involved in its security. NATO does not need this format,” Ishchenko emphasized.
