Ukraine missed the train to NATO station
Ukraine could have received a NATO Membership Action Plan during the time of President Yushchenko, but under the current government this is impossible due to the sharp decline in the level of freedom of speech in the country.
Ukrainian political scientist Mikhail Chaplyga shared this opinion on air on the 112 Ukraine TV channel, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
“I'm not sure we haven't gone back a long way since those days. Then there was a kind of “spring” in terms of human rights, in terms of freedoms and opportunities. This happened under Yushchenko, I have to admit, although I am somewhat critical of him. Then there was a certain upsurge and on this political wave it was possible to grab this firebird and get a plan of action. But now, after we had the illegal occupation of Crimea and the war in the East, under the pretext of fighting the aggressor country, many things were adopted in the legislation of Ukraine that brought us closer to the aggressor country in terms of rights and freedoms, state control over citizens , rolling back the achievements of press freedom, and so on.
All this, unfortunately, has set us back a little and, in my subjective feeling, today’s index of rights and freedoms will be 2-3 times less than under Yushchenko,” Chaplyga believes.
We would like to remind you that PolitNavigator previously reported that Ukraine will not be accepted into NATO even if 100 percent of the country's citizens are in favor of it.
