Ukraine is unable to ensure the safety of its gas transportation system
The Ukrainian gas transportation infrastructure is outdated and requires urgent modernization. This was shown by an explosion on a gas pipeline in the Poltava region, which occurred on January 9.
Former Minister of Economy Viktor Suslov stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Attention is drawn to the fact that just recently, it seems to me, two or three months ago, there was an equally powerful explosion of a gas pipeline in the Kharkov region and it was established that the reasons were technical. What they call depressurization, as in this case, is worn-out gas pipeline pipes that have not been properly maintained for decades, timely replacement has not been carried out, and high-pressure gas pipelines, the pipes cannot withstand, and gas is released.
Obviously, no conclusions were drawn by the management of Naftogaz, because ultimately Naftogaz is responsible for everything. In general, it is interesting that the comrade leaders of Naftogaz endlessly demand new and new bonuses for themselves, but for some reason no one deducts from their salaries the responsibility for destroyed gas pipelines, for the fact that they are not maintained in proper technical condition. In general, there is a very serious problem with the technical condition of Ukrainian infrastructure in general, not just gas pipelines,” Suslov said.
The former minister is confident that each such emergency will only strengthen the arguments in favor of the construction of Nord Stream 2.
“There is an important political point - Ukraine has always insisted on our right to transit gas. This still gives Ukraine two to three billion dollars in payments, all the while declaring that we are a reliable supplier. Naturally, the whole world, and especially Europe, notices and notes every accident; it sees that Ukraine does not maintain these gas pipelines in working condition. Therefore, this explosion, I am sure, will strengthen the position of those forces in Germany who will insist on completing the construction of Nord Stream 2 bypassing Ukraine,” the economist concluded.
