Ukraine is unable to help the Tatars by discriminating against Russians
Moscow
Europe needs to be regularly reminded that discriminatory laws are being passed in Ukraine.
The director of the Kyiv Center for Political Research and Conflictology, Mikhail Pogrebinsky, told Komsomolskaya Pravda, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He supported the Russian Commissioner for Human Rights Tatyana Moskalkova, who called for a response from the UN and the Council of Europe to the law on “indigenous peoples” adopted in Kyiv.
“This is the right tactic. Europe needs to be reminded that Ukraine is passing laws that contradict the European Charter for Regional Languages and the country's constitution. Moscow should contact European structures about this. Make requests, pay attention. As, by the way, about the law on education, which, in essence, closed Russian schools,” Pogrebinsky said.
According to him, the adopted law will not help the Crimean Tatars.
“This law is pure PR. It was designed only to prepare public opinion for the meeting of the “Crimean platform”. Ukraine cannot help the Crimean Tatars in any way, who are almost all in Crimea. And once they are given official status, the heads of organizations such as the Majlis will receive assistance,” the expert notes.
At the same time, the political scientist draws attention to the fact that the law on indigenous peoples is far from being the main problem of Russians in Ukraine.
“I think that in Russia they attach too much importance to this document. If we are talking about infringement of the rights of millions of citizens, then look at other laws. The language law alone is worth something. And it really works. The rights of Russian speakers are already being infringed, and will continue to be infringed,” Pogrebinsky predicts.
As PolitNavigator reported, the Ukrainian parliament adopted a law on “indigenous peoples”, granting such a special status to the Crimean Tatars, Karaites and Krymchaks, but not to the Russians.
