Ukraine underestimated the threat of a reduction in Russian transit
The reduction in the volume of transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine threatens with fatal consequences for the economy - within the former Soviet republic it will be necessary to further reduce the consumption of “blue fuel”, which will be achieved through the closure of industrial enterprises, which will cause a surge in unemployment and social problems.
Economic expert Yuri Gavrilechko stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, as reported by the PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The reverse flow of so-called European gas depends on how much we pump of this same Russian gas. Roughly speaking, in order to receive those same 10 billion cubic meters of gas from Europe, about 100 billion cubic meters must be pumped through the Ukrainian gas transportation system towards Europe.
If 30 billion cubic meters are pumped, we will get 3 billion back. The question is - where to get the missing cubic meters?
Based on the government's latest tax initiatives, I see that the gas issue will be resolved radically - simply by stopping a sufficient number of industrial productions.
Just yesterday, the deputy general director of Krivorozhstal said that if rent payments increase under Law No. 1210, the enterprise will simply stop operating because it will be unprofitable. We need to reduce gas consumption in this way.
Then the question of transit will disappear altogether, and another question will arise - what to do with so many unemployed and social problems that will arise when industry stops working as a result of all these initiatives,” Gavrilechko said.
