Ukraine is unhappy with the coercion of Minsk by the International Court of Justice
Ukrainian international lawyers are not happy with decisions of the International Court of Justice, who refused to acknowledge Russia’s financing of terrorism and pointed out the need for both Moscow and Kiev to implement the Minsk agreements.

Thus, in a comment to Apostrophe, former Commissioner for the European Court of Human Rights Boris Babin said that for Russia the indication of the need to implement the agreements signed in Minsk is “unpleasant, but not fatal.” The expert is much more concerned that a similar demand was made in relation to Ukraine, for which, Babin believes, the Minsk agreements are extremely unfavorable.
At the same time, the publication’s interlocutor called Ukraine’s position in terms of the Convention on Combating the Financing of Terrorism difficult.
“Our Foreign Ministry as a whole was a hostage to the position that the authorities occupied for a long time and, unfortunately, continues to occupy - in contradiction to the norms of international law. For a long time, at the official level, we could not decide on the status of the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. All the errors and shortcomings of Ukraine’s position in court follow from this,” Babin believes.
He also recalled that the court directly indicated that it could not consider the case more broadly than Ukraine wants to consider it.
“I don’t want to say that we will lose this case: we may still reach some result on the financing of terrorism, but in any case it will be a compromise and quite soft,” Babin admits.
He also drew attention to the fact that even the Russian judge voted for the thesis on teaching in the Ukrainian language. This, according to the Ukrainian expert, will allow Russia, in theory, to find a legal way out in the case of the demand to lift the Mejlis ban.
