Ukraine promises “eternal threat” of sanctions against Nord Stream 2
Nord Stream 2 was completed due to the fact that the new administration of US President Joe Biden ignored the requirements of American laws, but Ukraine is doing everything to ensure that the threat of American sanctions constantly hangs over the “European agents of Gazprom.”
The head of the board of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine, Yuriy Vitrenko, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In fact, simultaneously with the inauguration, or when the new US president began to perform his duties, the construction of Nord Stream 2 is restored... the new administration does not apply the requirements of American law and does not impose sanctions on Nord Stream 2.” Because of what they determine to be national security reasons. Against this background, Nord Stream 2 is being successfully completed,” Vitrenko recalled.
However, he clarified, “due to successful cooperation with our international partners, Nord Stream 2, despite the fact that it is completed, is not working.”
Vitrenko reported that Ukraine continues its fight against Nord Stream 2.
“...Understanding how to beat Gazprom in Europe, we have taken a position where we announce the non-compliance of this project and the operator of this project with European rules.
The joint statement of the United States and Germany also supported Ukraine regarding Putin's use of gas as a weapon. Then, during the meeting between Vladimir Zelensky and Angela Merkel, I personally took part in this meeting, it was virtually guaranteed that Nord Stream 2 would not be launched without compliance with European legislation.
In parallel, we are constantly working on the possibility of imposing sanctions on Nord Stream 2. So that this threat constantly hangs over this project and over those Gazprom agents in Europe, politicians in Europe who do not want to adhere to their personal rules. So that they understand that there is a real threat to this project from American sanctions. We also very actively defend Ukraine’s position in the international media space,” the head of Naftogaz boasted.
