Ukraine is preparing an appeal to the UN in connection with violation of environmental conventions by Belarus, Deputy Minister of Ecology Anna Vronskaya said at a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada.

This is how the official responded to deputy Igor Guz’s demand to immediately intervene in the situation in Volyn, where lakes are shallowing due to the work of the Khotislav chalk quarry in Belarus.

“In Volyn today, due to drought and other things, the lakes have become significantly shallower. What is happening to Svityaz now is a disaster. It became shallow by several meters. In Belarus, the notorious Khotislavsky quarry is being developed, which destroys all the Shatsk lakes. I ask urgently - we need a commission that will investigate this situation. Please immediately,” said Guz.

“We know the problem. Experts are working on this issue. There are grounds to apply under the UN International Convention in connection with Belarus’ violation of this convention,” Vronskaya assured.
