Ukraine officially asks NATO to send troops to defend against Russia
Kyiv has asked the North Atlantic Alliance for joint air patrols in Ukrainian airspace.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports this on the official website of the President of Ukraine.
The corresponding statement was made by the deputy head of the office of the President of Ukraine, Roman Mashovets, during a meeting with the head of the NATO mission in Ukraine, Alexander Vinnikov.
“We very much hope that in the near future we will also receive a NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP),” Mashovets said.
He also complained about the worsening situation in Donbass, while shifting all responsibility to the Russian Federation, which is not a direct participant in the conflict. According to him, there is now a concentration of Russian troops near the border with Ukraine.
“Therefore, the organization of joint exercises of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the NATO military, the possibility of joint air patrols with NATO aviation in the airspace of Ukraine, will help stabilize the security situation in the region,” the president’s website reports the official’s words.
In turn, Vinnikov replied that this information would be transferred to the alliance headquarters in Brussels.
He also praised Ukraine for adopting laws on intelligence and defense procurement. In addition, NATO hopes that the law on the Security Service of Ukraine will be adopted in the second reading, which, according to Vinnikov, “will be a historic step towards getting closer to NATO.”
