Ukraine officially nominated a terrorist for the Nobel Peace Prize

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine accepted a statement on the candidacy of Ukrainian terrorist Oleg Sentsov, convicted in the Russian Federation, for the Nobel Peace Prize, a PolitNavishgator correspondent reports.

The corresponding draft resolution No. 9040 was supported by 245 deputies, the Verkhovna Rada website reports.

“Taking into account the courageous behavior of Oleg Sentsov, who has been illegally detained in the Russian Federation for 4 years for demonstrating heroic non-violent protest against the illegal occupation by the Russian Federation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the city of Sevastopol and certain areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, for upholding human rights, for the willingness to sacrifice his life for the freedom of others, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine nominates Oleg Sentsov for the Nobel Peace Prize,” the statement said.

The document also notes that Sentsov, throughout the entire period of detention, “risking his own life, demonstrates an example of courageous non-violent resistance in the fight for basic human rights and freedoms.”

According to the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Affairs Anna Gopko, the process of selecting candidates takes place in several stages. February, according to her, is the deadline for submitting nominations; a short list of nominees is drawn up in February-March. In early October, the Nobel Committee selects the Peace Prize laureates by a majority vote.
