The liquidation of Ukrainian uranium production, which is on the verge of bankruptcy, will cause a serious environmental and social disaster, wipe out several cities from the face of the earth and finally deprive the country of energy independence.

This was stated by Dmitry Cherny, a deputy from the Servant of the People faction, during a plenary session of the Ukrainian parliament, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“A critical situation has developed at the Eastern Mining and Processing Plant enterprise of the nuclear industrial complex of Ukraine, which is strategically important for the country’s energy independence.

In 2019, the price of uranium oxide concentrate created conditions for the unprofitable activities of the State Enterprise "VostGOK". This practically does not allow the only domestic producer of uranium concentrate to ensure production activities, development and environmentally safe maintenance of uranium facilities, leading to bankruptcy and liquidation of uranium production in Ukraine,” the deputy noted.

In his opinion, the bankruptcy of the enterprise will lead to thousands of unemployed people, the extinction of several cities and will put some Ukrainian regions on the brink of an environmental disaster.

“In turn, the cessation of the activities of the State Enterprise “VostGOK” will lead to an increase in social tension in the regions of the Dnepropetrovsk and Kirovograd regions, in particular, associated with increased unemployment - more than five thousand people may be left without work.

The lack of receipt of a significant amount of funds in the local budgets of the city of Zhovti Vody, the town of Smolino and the city of Malaya Viska generally threatens the existence of these settlements as a whole.

The need to annually spend more than 800 million hryvnia of budget funds on the maintenance of dangerous facilities in uranium mines and the uranium processing complex in the above regions,” demanded the deputy.
