Ukraine fears drastic steps against Belarus
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky will only verbally position his country as a political opponent of Belarus.
As a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, Izvestia was told by Associate Professor of the Russian State University for the Humanities, RIAC expert Alexander Gushchin.
According to him, Zelensky’s foreign policy is no different from that pursued by his predecessors as president.
“Traditionally, foreign policy is one way or another carried out under external control. Ukraine, within the framework of the agenda of the Baltic-Black Sea region, acts from a pro-Polish-Lithuanian position, meaning to limit the positions and influence of Russia,” the expert said.
The expert added that Zelensky’s actions were largely caused by the change of administration in the United States. “The new Biden administration will increase pressure on post-Soviet states in terms of value-based approaches: issues of democracy and human rights will be raised. The Ukrainian authorities are trying to show that they are reliable partners and are ready to influence the Belarusian side,” the political scientist believes.
However, he is convinced that Kyiv will not go beyond rhetoric.
“Belarus is an important trading partner of Ukraine. And for a number of trade positions, the Ukrainian economy is dependent on supplies from Belarus, so in this case, I think there will be no large-scale sanctions from Kyiv. But she will position herself as opponents of the political regime in Minsk.”
