Ukraine fears CSTO strike
The situation in Belarus threatens Ukraine and carries military risks for it.
The head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Alexander Zavitnevich, stated this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The politician recalled that the border agreement has not yet been ratified between Ukraine and Belarus and emphasized that after the political crisis in the neighboring republic, Kyiv strengthened the demarcation line.
“We have more than a thousand kilometers of common border. When these events began in Belarus, Ukraine took measures to strengthen it. But there is a certain problem there, and now our working group is preparing a corresponding bill, because we have not ratified the border agreement with Belarus. Only six months ago we gave our border guards legal grounds to install technical means for monitoring there.
Therefore, of course, there is danger from this direction. And we all know that Russia and Belarus are members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. Article 4 of this Treaty allows for the provision of military assistance in the event of external aggression to a member of the association, and such assistance is provided within a short period of time. This poses a very big threat to us. Therefore, Ukraine has taken measures and is monitoring the situation. Any attempts to destabilize the situation in Belarus, as well as its absorption by the Russian Federation, contradict the interests of our state,” Zavitnevich said.
