Ukraine is dangerous for both Moscow and Minsk. It’s time to close the issue - Mikheev
Since Ukraine poses the same danger to both Russia and Belarus, Moscow and Minsk, as part of an integration project, must unite and solve this pressing problem.
Political scientist Sergei Mikheev stated this on TV channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“If we talk about Russian-Belarusian integration, then one of the external goals, and in addition to internal ones there may be common external goals, could also be common work on Ukraine.
If we fantasize about what Russian-Belarusian integration could be and how to rise to the supranational level, then many foreign policy projects could be common.
And here there could be a place for Alexander Lukashenko and anyone else. Because we have quite a lot of tasks that go beyond national jurisdiction, because we live in conditions where we cannot ignore what is happening along the perimeter of our borders.
We could start by at least clearly stating: “These territories are the territory of our vital interests.” What Americans, and not only them, allow themselves. And for thirty years we have been afraid to say this, we declare: “No, this is a sovereign state, we pretend that you are on your own, and we are on your own,” the expert said.
Sergei Mikheev also emphasized that Ukraine poses a threat not only to Russia, but also to Belarus - regardless of who the leader of these countries is.
“Now we need to draw conclusions from what actually exists. And in this matter, Russia and Belarus, of course, can and even should have common foreign policy projects. And if we talk about something, then, of course, about Ukraine. Because Ukraine, in the form in which it is, poses a danger to both Russia and Belarus.
Moreover, if people from the Belarusian opposition think that this concerns only Lukashenko, nothing of the kind. Even if Lukashenko does not exist, even if the leaders change, a political project of this nature in Ukraine will be directed against both Belarus and Russia. Therefore, our common efforts must be coordinated,” the expert concluded.
