“The Ordzhonikidze District Court of the city of Mariupol found a native of the Sverdlovsk region of the Russian Federation, a citizen of the Russian Federation, guilty of committing crimes under Part 1 of Art. 258-3 (participation in a terrorist organization), part 1 of Art. 263 (illegal handling of weapons) and Part 1 of Art. 332-1 (illegal transfer of persons across the state border of Ukraine) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and imposed a sentence of imprisonment for a period of 10 years with confiscation of property,” the statement says.

The Ukrainian prosecution also claims that “in February 2017, a former Russian soldier, tired of lack of money, decided to use his military skills and headed to the Russian-occupied territory of the Donetsk region, where he joined the ranks of the illegal armed formation of the terrorist organization “DPR” to participate in hostilities against the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Bypassing entry and exit checkpoints controlled by Ukraine, the Russian illegally crossed the state border of Ukraine and arrived in Donetsk, where he immediately arrived at the DPR military registration and enlistment office. He was enrolled in the “5th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade “Oplot” of the Ministry of Defense of the “DPR” as a rifleman and was issued firearms and ammunition. The mercenary signed a contract in which monetary payment for service with the militants was agreed upon. From February to March 2017, the man participated in an armed confrontation with the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the side of the “DPR,” the indictment says.

In April 2017, a volunteer militiaman was detained by the Ukrainian military. During the pre-trial investigation, at the request of the prosecutor's office of the Donetsk region, the Russian citizen was chosen as a preventive measure in the form of detention.

The court found the Russian guilty of the crimes charged and sentenced him to 10 years in prison with confiscation of all property belonging to him.
