The refusal was carried out on behalf of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine. A statement issued by the GPU said that Saakashvili would not be extradited because he “may face political persecution in Georgia.”

Associated Press reminds readers that Saakashvili was President of Georgia from 2004 to 2013. He took the place of president as a result of the velvet “Rose Revolution”. Saakashvili left Georgia after accusations of abuse of power were brought against him by political opponents who came to power. Saakashvili is also accused of embezzlement of public funds.

As PolitNavigator reported, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko appointed Saakashvili as his adviser.
