Ukraine refused to sign an agreement to end the torture of prisoners
The Ukrainian side refused to sign a bilateral document on ending violence against prisoners of war.
This is stated in a message from the press service of the DPR Ombudsman Daria Morozova, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Upon returning from captivity, as a result of conversations with those released and medical examinations, it was revealed that approximately 95 percent of those interviewed were subjected to torture. After the first stage of the exchange, we reported on this at a meeting of the humanitarian subgroup, after which coordinator Tony Frisch proposed signing a Declaration of Condemnation of all forms of torture, ill-treatment, sexual violence and threats of violence against persons detained in connection with the conflict ", the message says.
The document obliges the parties to make every effort to prevent such cases and provide medical care to all persons in custody.
“However, representatives of the Ukrainian side do not want to take even such a harmless step; they refuse to undertake the obligation to treat detainees humanely and sign the Declaration. Over the course of three meetings, we and the OSCE representatives insisted on signing the document, but the plenipotentiary representatives of Ukraine ignore this proposal,” the Ombudsman noted.
According to her, Ukrainian security forces continue to torture detainees, and authorized representatives of the Ukrainian side, who could influence them, simply do not want to do this.
“Moreover, there is no reason to believe that the use of torture will not stop in the future, which shows the true attitude towards people in Ukraine,” concluded Daria Morozova.
