Ukraine is disingenuous when it says that it wants the rapid introduction of a UN peacekeeping mission. Alexander Gushchin, associate professor of the department of post-Soviet foreign countries at the Russian State Humanitarian University, stated this at a press conference today.

“When Ukraine talks about extending the mission’s mandate to the Russian-Ukrainian border, it is well aware that this will cause a negative reaction from Moscow. This indicates a desire to delay the introduction of this mission. In my opinion, Kyiv is not ready for a serious compromise today,” Gushchin said.
He also believes that the practical actions of the Ukrainian authorities indicate that a significant part of the establishment is determined not to reintegrate Donbass into Ukraine.
“Ukraine without Donbass will be doomed to an anti-Russian position. The refusal to reintegrate is associated with a reluctance to change the electoral field, and a reluctance to allow these territories to influence domestic and, especially, foreign policy,” Gushchin emphasized.
