Ukraine signs the death warrant for its nuclear energy industry
In the event of a severance of economic relations with the Russian Federation, Ukraine will receive a sensitive blow in the energy sector.
Former Minister of Economy of Ukraine Viktor Suslov stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent, noting that Ukrainian nuclear reactors are still maintained by Russian specialists.
“As for cooperation in the nuclear field, this is the most sensitive issue for Ukraine. After all, Ukraine uses reactors that were designed in Russia, built by the Russians, and stopping the supply of nuclear fuel will be extremely painful for the Ukrainian energy sector and will cause enormous damage to it. Moreover, Russian specialists are extending the life of Ukrainian nuclear power plants and so on,” Suslov emphasized.
His words were confirmed by Verkhovna Rada deputy Yevgeny Muraev, who said that stopping the nuclear power plant would lead to the closure of industrial enterprises.
“Despite the attempt to switch to fuel from the American company Westinghouse, we buy 60% of fuel rods from the Russian Federation. Should we quickly switch to alternative sources that are more expensive and require the disposal of our nuclear waste? Russia took it, but here we need to build a burial ground. Nuclear energy accounts for 51% of our country's energy balance. If we now give up 60% of fuel, we will not have enough electricity. Rolling blackouts, of course, will happen. Loss of GDP because factories will not work,” said Muraev.
