About it in an interview with TSN he said Director of the National Antarctic Center of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine Valery Litvinov.
“This is such a rich continent. I’m not afraid to say that Ukraine’s wealth will increase at the expense of Antarctica,” he said.
According to him, there is no less oil and gas in Antarctica than on the Arabian Peninsula.
There is a ban on mining on the mainland until 2041, but the situation may change, the scientist suggested.
Several countries, including the United States and Russia, have already declared Antarctica a sphere of their interests, Litvinov added.
The Akademik Vernadsky station was founded by a British expedition in the 1930s (then the station was called Faraday). In 1996, Great Britain transferred the station to Ukraine.
