“Three years ago, the beginnings of the institution of “non-citizens” appeared. This applies to Ukrainians of Donbass and Crimea. They could not vote in elections. They do not receive pensions or benefits. They cannot obtain, or receive with great difficulty, biometric passports. That is, quasi-conditions are already being systematically created to ignore their rights. And under these conditions, linguistic strife is very seriously and regularly inflamed. All these definitions “vatniks”, “coloradas” are very similar to the nicknames [cockroaches] that were given to the Hutus by the Tutsi [in Rwanda]. The purpose of such nicknames is to dehumanize other people and make it easier to commit crimes against them,” the expert said.
“Conditions for conflict have already been created in the country, and language, through the efforts of nationalists, is becoming a key marker of “friend or foe.” At the same time, unfortunately, the authorities not only do not stop the instigators of hatred, but also indulge them, whipping up hysteria in the search for internal enemies, fifth columns, “connecting rods,” and FSB agents. And at the same time, pursuing a policy of forced Ukrainization,” Bortnyk concluded.
