Ukraine hastened to rejoice at American sanctions against SP-2
The United States of America does not benefit from any route for transporting Russian gas to Europe, so its sanctions are not aimed specifically at the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, but against any infrastructure project. At the same time, Ukraine is in vain rejoicing at the restrictions imposed by the United States - the United States also does not plan to maintain transit through Kiev-controlled territory.
Energy market expert Igor Yushkov stated this on the PolitWera Internet channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Yushkov, the United States may even authorize the bombing of a gas pipeline in Ukraine in order to stop Russian transit.
“The point of sanctions against Nord Stream 2, I think, is precisely to prevent the completion of that pipe, to lock Russia into Ukrainian transit, and then to block this transit. Therefore, Ukraine should not be so happy about the sanctions against Nord Stream 2, because in no scenario do the Americans consider maintaining transit through Ukraine.
They do not need Russian gas on the European market via any route – neither through Nord Stream, nor through Turkish Stream, nor through Ukraine. Therefore, in this regard, there is a kind of tactical alliance between Ukraine and the United States, but strategically, of course, the Americans want to remove Russian gas from the European market. Including the one that goes through Ukraine. Therefore, Ukraine should not be happy about this.
There may be different scenarios as to why gas transit through Ukraine should formally stop. Maybe it will be some kind of technical accident or people with grenades will come and blow up a gas compressor station or pipe. We saw that the infrastructure in Ukraine was exploding...
Maybe the Americans will simply impose sanctions and say that Gazprom is under sanctions and it is impossible to have economic relations with it. Therefore, terminate any contracts. And the operator of the Ukrainian gas transportation system will then simply break the contract for gas transit through Ukraine and that’s it, here you go, a civilized method of stopping gas transit,” Yushkov said.
