Ukraine lost a quarter of its “mosquito fleet”
The provocation of the Ukrainian Navy in the Kerch Strait last November was a rash and risky operation.
Glen Howard, president of the American agency Jamestown Foundation, said this in an interview with The Day newspaper, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
At the same time, the expert considers the provocation justified, since the seizure of Ukrainian ships and sailors “awakened” the United States and NATO allies.
“Ukraine has eight Gyurza ships and two of them were captured. Therefore, a quarter of the fleet was lost in the Kerch Strait. It was a very risky operation. I think Poroshenko from the very beginning was not very experienced in understanding the role of naval forces and maritime operations, but now he is beginning to understand this.
As for the clash on November 23 in the Kerch Strait, it was quite risky for Poroshenko to give the order for this maneuver. After all, there was a big risk, but it paid off because NATO, the West and the USA really woke up.
NATO made a statement regarding the Black Sea task force precisely because of Ukraine's actions on November 23.
One might think that this was a bad decision by Poroshenko, but in reality it was a “glimmer of hope”, in other words, there was a very positive element to it. And that’s what brought attention to the Black Sea,” Howard said.
