Ukraine is repeating the mistakes of a century ago
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko is “running on the rake” of Hetman Petro Skoropadsky, who ruled Kiev in 1918.
Kiev political scientist Yuri Romanenko stated this in his blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the expert, Poroshenko, like Skoropadsky, is supported only by the “bourgeoisie,” but this will not save him from food riots in the province.
“The phenomenon of support for Poroshenko reminds me of the phenomenon of support for Skoropadsky from the bourgeoisie and intelligentsia in 1918. In general, this situation is very similar to what we have today. Summer of 1918, hetmanate, Skoropadsky rules the country. Well, how it governs - it governs within Kyiv, and outside of Kiev - the occupying allied authorities represented by the Germans and Austro-Hungarians are engaged in requisitioning, according to the agreements that were reached with the Central Rada in March 18.
And the majority of the population really hate the hetmanate, because there is no qualitative improvement, the factory owners are happy, the industrialists are happy, because they can continue to live the way of life that was before the revolution. But everyone else hates the hetman. And it all ends with the fact that as soon as the Germans left because of the revolution and the political collapse that they experienced due to the First World War, Skoropadsky was left with bare bayonets.
And then the hungry and angry murmur of the province began to be heard, which began to approach Kiev, and it all ended with the fact that on December 14, 18, Skoropadsky fled along with the departing German army and the Directory entered. So, 100 years later, in 2019, we again see the same phenomenon - we see a well-fed capital, our hetman, who paints great prospects for us, and we see a majority who disagree with this and want a change of course,” Romanenko said.
