This opinion was expressed in a conversation with a PolitNavigator correspondent by Ukrainian political scientist Alexander Semchenko, who noted that the repeal of this law restores the effect of the previous law on languages, adopted in the Ukrainian SSR.
According to him, Soviet law is generally not bad, with the exception of some nuances.
“But in the Verkhovna Rada there are two bills on language, the development of which was related to Svoboda when it was in parliament, and therefore everything can be much more serious - an attack on the Russian language will begin, escalating the situation and aggravating relations,” the expert warns .
He also said that in addition to purely legal ones, there are also political aspects.
“The repealed law, in a sense, was a symbol of the loyal attitude of the Ukrainian state to the languages of national minorities, and not just to the Russian language. This symbol, it turns out, was trampled, as in February 2014, which led to bad consequences. This is the second time,” the political scientist fears.
In his opinion, there could be serious political consequences, especially in regions where national minorities are concentrated, in Transcarpathia and Bukovina.
At the same time, he added that he does not believe in the activity of Russian speakers, since they did not particularly protest when the problem of the language article in the educational law arose.
“Another point that is very important here: for the first time in four years, the Constitutional Court came to life. There, it turns out, they rotated the judges. The decision, in my opinion, is controversial. I don’t understand how it fits with Article 10 of the Constitution, which talks about languages. It seems that the Constitutional Court has shown that it is completely controlled by the authorities. This is not good,” summed up Semchenko.
