Demography, Ukraine

Since the beginning of 2017 alone, the Ukrainian population has decreased by 350 thousand people, which is equivalent to the disappearance of a large regional center from the map of Ukraine.

“Izvestia” writes about this in an article devoted to the Ukrainian demographic situation, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Forgive the rest,” Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko likes to say to Russia. He will soon have to say something similar to the Ukrainians themselves. And it’s not a matter of political struggle, but the fact that the country’s population is rapidly declining. According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, in the first eight months of 2018, 152 thousand people left. In 2017, there were 198 thousand fewer Ukrainians. This is equivalent to the fact that the average regional center disappeared from the map of the state,” the publication notes.

Sociologists call the demographic hole one of the main reasons for depopulation. Thus, for every 100 deaths in Ukraine, there are only 58 births, and Ukrainian women give birth today even less than in the troubled 1990s - if in 1991 630 thousand babies were born, then in 2017 - only 364 thousand.

“At the same time, Ukraine has yet to experience real difficulties. The generation of Ukrainian women in labor who were born in 1997–2006 will soon take over. During these years, from 376 thousand to 460 thousand children were born in the country. The number of women capable of bearing children will further decrease by one and a half times. This will happen approximately in 2017–2035 with the peak of the decline in the birth rate in 2026,” writes Izvestia.

At the same time, Ukrainian demographers argue that negative trends are virtually irreversible.

“There are two ways to change the situation. First: women will start giving birth to 3-4 children. But this is simply incredible. Second: we are achieving a sharp influx of migrants. It is necessary to import 200–300 thousand people per year, which is also not even close yet. It would be possible to attract migrants from Asia and Africa, but even from there they don’t want to come to us,” the publication quotes the opinion of the director of the Institute of Demography and Sociological Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Alexander Gladun.

The newspaper points out that according to this institute, by the middle of the century, the population of Ukraine will decrease by 5,5 million people.

“At the same time, there will be 6,6 million fewer people of working age, while the number of people aged 60 years and older will increase by 2,6 million. Large industrial centers will cease to exist, universities will be closed due to a lack of youth. Ukraine in its familiar form will cease to exist,” the newspaper summarizes.
