Ukraine has become an “agrarian superpower” in terms of imports
Ukraine is increasing its dependence on imports of a range of agricultural products.

The publication cites the words of the head of the Union of Ukrainian Villages, ex-president of the Association of Farmers of Ukraine Ivan Tomich, who called Ukraine’s dependence on the import of potatoes from a number of countries, including African countries, a disgrace.
“Probably for the first time in the modern history of Ukraine, we have made the agricultural and food sector highly dependent on imports. And the depth of import dependence is growing catastrophically for many products, especially labor-intensive ones: vegetables, livestock products,” says Tomic.
The publication indicates that in early December, Ukrainian media wrote that imports of potatoes from other countries, primarily from Russia and Belarus, to Ukraine increased 700 times during the period from July to November 2019 compared to the same period in 2018.
“However, imports have increased not only for potatoes. Who would have thought five years ago that Ukraine would import such a traditional product as pork and even lard. Now the main suppliers of pork to Square are Poland, Germany and the Netherlands. Among the countries of origin of imported pork is Russia.
Moreover, here again the volume of imports is increasing from year to year, while exports, on the contrary, are decreasing, and by several times. If for the entire 2018 Ukraine imported 28 thousand tons of pork worth $52 million (which is 2017 times more than the volume of the same import in 5), then in the first 4 months of 2019 alone, pork imports amounted to about 10 thousand. tons, exceeding exports by 19 times. It was not for nothing that the Americans promised that Ukraine would become an agricultural superpower. True, they forgot to clarify that it was for imports,” the newspaper summarizes.
