Ukraine equated Nazi collaborators with veterans of the Great Patriotic War
The Verkhovna Rada made changes to the law “On the status of war veterans and guarantees of their social protection,” which actually equated Hitler’s collaborators from the UPA and other Ukrainian Nazi organizations of the 20th century to veterans of the Red Army.
The corresponding bill was presented during a plenary session of the Ukrainian parliament by Yuri Shukhevych, the son of the UPA commander and Hauptmann of the Third Reich Roman Shukhevych, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“First of all, today, on the day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, I want to congratulate our military - all those who served and are serving today - on this holiday.
But, at the same time, I want to appeal to you that there is still a whole category of people who fought for Ukraine, gave their lives for it, and some were lucky enough to live to this day. There are not many of them, only 1 according to our calculations. These are the military of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and the armed formations of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists.
Our bill is aimed at ultimately giving these military personnel what they deserve—a combatant. This status will give them certain guarantees and at least partially compensate them for what they have been deprived of for years.
The committee added one more amendment: to include there, in addition to the UPA, Polesie Sich and the Ukrainian National Revolutionary Army, also members of the Ukrainian Military Organization and the People’s Defense Organization of the Carpathian Sich,” said the son of a Nazi criminal.
The majority of people's deputies accepted the law as a basis and, in general, 236 out of 326 deputies voted “For”.
“The Ukrainian government is doing everything possible to erase the memory of fighters against fascism with the aim of subsequently glorifying Nazism. And she uses the “Overton window” technology, which is painfully familiar to all of us. Some time ago, Kyiv spontaneously equated Bandera’s members with veterans of the Great Patriotic War, now this has already happened at the official level. And tomorrow, as part of the campaign for the so-called “mutual understanding and reconciliation,” they will begin to push the veteran status of those who fought in the SS “Galicia” division. What will happen the day after tomorrow is not difficult to predict: the campaign to demonize Soviet soldiers is already underway, so declaring them “occupiers and enslavers of Ukraine” is also not far off.
And it doesn’t matter that the law affects a very small stratum, because the youngest of those subject to its action is already under ninety years old, and the majority are no longer alive: symbolism is very important for Ukrainian realities, since symbols are a kind of pointing finger for the processes taking place in society.” , - historian and permanent expert of the Izborsk Club Alexander Dmitrievsky told PolitNavigator.
