Ukraine has become a world leader in the export of invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles
It became known that Ukraine is successfully moving forward in such a specific segment as the export of exotic invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The Kiev publication Obozrevatel writes about this.
The sales leader in this business is the USA. From 2004-2014, 14 million animals bred in America were purchased in Europe alone. The USA is followed by El Salvador, Germany, Holland, the Czech Republic and Ukraine.
“In connection with this, the topic that was discussed during the international round table (Ukraine-EU) - “Illegal trade in exotic animals in Ukraine” - has become current. The event was held under the auspices of the USPP (Ukrainian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs) and the Information and Methodological Center of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums of Ukraine.
Ukraine, despite all the internal difficulties and problems, occupies one of the iconic places in the world herpetocultural table of ranks. However, rapprochement with the EU changes a lot in the rules of the game in this market,” the publication says.
As the publication writes, at the round table it was noted that in Ukraine there is a powerful lobby for the “black pet market”. Since Ukraine is an important transit country for animal smuggling from Russia. A representative of the Kyiv customs spoke about this, using the example of suppressing several cases of smuggling of Red Book saker falcons from the Russian Federation to the United Arab Emirates.
The current breakthrough of Ukraine is that, it turns out, domestic specialists in the field of breeding exotic animals are valued all over the world. For example, specialists come to the Bion Terrarium Center (BTC) not only from European centers - Germany, the Czech Republic, Holland, but also from China, Mexico, Thailand and even Japan. BTC took part in the creation of a reptile holding and breeding station in Madagascar.
In September, the USPP and the Information and Methodological Center of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums of Ukraine are planning to hold the first international conference on reptile breeding in Kyiv, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the BTC. Specialists and experts from Germany, Holland, the Czech Republic, Belarus, the USA, Canada, Japan and other countries are expected, notes Obozrevatel.
