Ukraine scares shipowners with “Russian aggression”
Ukraine seeks to convey to all shipowners that Russia poses a threat to their ships heading to the ports of the Azov Sea.
Chairman of the State Service of Maritime and River Transport of Ukraine Dmitry Petrenko stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“What happened now in the Kerch Strait, almost since the Second World War, there have been no such violations in world practice. This is a violation of all the basic principles of free commercial shipping. I strongly condemn the actions of the Russian Federation to block the Kerch Strait. Ramming a Ukrainian ship is an open act of aggression.
For our part, we turned to the International Maritime Organization and a few days ago it officially expressed its position on this matter and condemned the actions of the Russian Federation. We are now working with the International Maritime Agency, with the member countries of the Black Sea Memorandum to disseminate this information. All shipowners must understand what Russia is and what Russian actions are. And what a risk it is for them when they visit these ports. When a country completely neutralizes international maritime law, this can be applied to every shipowner,” he said.
