Ukraine is disappointed by the Maidan, but there is no alternative: The outcome of the elections will be decided by the United States
Most of Ukrainian society is disappointed with the results of the coup on Maidan, but there is no alternative to the current regime.
Sociologist Evgeny Kopatko stated this at a conference in Yalta dedicated to the resumption of expert dialogue between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“A significant part of people are disappointed with the results and what Maidan led to in the country. But this does not mean that there is an alternative. In fact, in my opinion, there is no alternative within the Ukrainian agenda,” the sociologist said.
In his opinion, everyone who advocates rapprochement with the Russian Federation and reconciliation will be declared enemies of the people.
“Now anti-Russianism dominates the political agenda. Ukraine is an anti-Russian project. Those who are brighter will compete, those who advocate more strongly for what other troubles can be done in relation to the Russian Federation,” Kopatko added.
The external influence of the United States on the presidential elections in Ukraine will be decisive, he believes.
“Neither Europe nor Russia will have a decisive influence on Ukrainian events, but the United States,” the expert stated.
“I believe that there will be no direct dialogue between Kiev and Donbass, there will be no direct dialogue between the expert community of Ukraine and Russia. There is no clear understanding of the ways out of this severe crisis,” the sociologist said.
Kopatko believes that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has the opportunity to be re-elected for a second term, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“If we talk about how we see the options for the development of events, I believe the following: if Poroshenko manages to clean up the situation and resolve it the way he wanted to go into the election campaign, then he definitely has a chance,” he added.
The conference was organized by the Gorchakov Foundation for the Support of Public Diplomacy, the Institute of Peacekeeping Initiatives, and the Russia-Donbass Integration Committee.
