Ukraine gives Russia a free hand in Donbass – Kiev expert
By denouncing the friendship treaty with the Russian Federation, Ukraine strengthens the Russian Federation’s position on Crimea and the Donbass republics.
Political and economic expert Vsevolod Stepanyuk stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“With this agreement, the Russian Federation recognized the borders of Ukraine. I cannot say that withdrawal from this agreement makes it possible to revise the borders, but it strengthens the position of the Russian Federation, especially in Crimea. Now, in international organizations, Russia will have an extra argument as to why they annexed Crimea. Now the Russian Federation will have a free hand to revise the Minsk agreements and to review the status of unrecognized entities in the Donbass. This worsens Ukraine’s negotiating position,” the expert said.
He recalled that the agreement with the Russian Federation is part of international law and Ukrainian legislation.
“The adoption of some other laws that contradicted only brought chaos to the legislative field. It is not clear whether the president can, by his decision, not extend this treaty, or whether this still requires a vote of the Verkhovna Rada, because, according to the Constitution, ratified treaties are part of Ukrainian legislation. They have even higher priority over domestic legislation,” Stepaniuk added.
