Ukraine gives Russia a free hand
The Treaty of Friendship with Russia was the only document establishing the borders between Ukraine and Russia, and its termination deprives Ukraine of a mechanism for resolving the issue of this border.
The former head of the information department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleg Voloshin stated this on air on TV channel 112 Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Responsible politicians and diplomats first think through the consequences and then do something. This agreement can only be replaced by a document agreed upon with the Russian side. Accordingly, if we decided not to extend it, then I want to understand how Mr. Poroshenko (I have not yet heard an answer from him and Mr. Klimkin) sees the mechanism for settling our eastern borders with Russia,” the expert noted.
He added that there is no other document that regulates the issue of borders between Russia and Ukraine.
“All other documents were signed on the basis of this. Accordingly, they lose their power in the same way. This gives Russia grounds to terminate them all,” Voloshin emphasized.
