Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova told reporters about this today.
“Such claims are, at the very least, surprising, since the library of Ukrainian literature has never belonged to the Ukrainian side. It existed as an independent state institution of the city of Moscow. And her work was financed from the city budget,” Zakharova said.
She called the Ukrainian side’s statements that the library’s book collection would be destroyed untrue. The Ukrainian delegation made this statement at a meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna on April 6.
“The collection of the Ukrainian library is transferred to the Center for Slavic Cultures, which was created in Moscow on the basis of the Library of Foreign Literature. The process of transferring book funds to the Center, which is already successfully operating, will be completed approximately in 2017. Thus, anyone will be able to freely familiarize themselves with excellent examples of Ukrainian literature,” Zakharova said.
At the same time, the diplomat called statements about the protection of the Ukrainian minority in Russia “hypocritical rhetoric.”
“The claims look strange against the backdrop of Ukraine’s policy towards printed Russian-language products. On December 8, 2016, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law restricting, and essentially banning, access to Russian printed products in Ukraine. I’m not even talking about the total censorship of Russian film products, the ban on broadcasting Russian TV channels, quotas for television and radio broadcasting,” Zakharova said.
