Ukraine decided to break off friendship with Russia piecemeal
The rupture of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between the Russian Federation and Ukraine could lead to the fact that the Russian border will run along the line of the conflict in Donbass.
The presidential representative in parliament, Verkhovna Rada deputy Irina Lutsenko said this on Channel 5, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to her, Ukraine decided to withdraw from this treaty partially so as not to lose international recognition of its borders.
“The withdrawal from this agreement must be gradual. By the way, we already started it in 15, coming out with separate items. Why is it impossible today, for example, to completely withdraw from this treaty? I will give one argument: the said treaty of friendship and cooperation states that both Russia and Ukraine recognize the legality of the borders between the Russian and Ukrainian states. If we now denounce this treaty and withdraw from this position, Russia will have every right to say that if we do not recognize the border... then where is that line, where is that border. Either this is the one where we want a peacekeeping mission to become, which is taken into account throughout the world and which is the border between Russia and Ukraine, or Russia will say to itself: “Well, they don’t recognize this border, they don’t want mutual obligations,” and they can play with these formulations differently, move it, for example, to the demarcation line. You cannot give Russia thoughtless concessions without analyzing the consequences... A very good analysis, a very balanced diplomatic and governmental approach. We need to withdraw from this agreement, for example, if a peacekeeping mission is established on the border, we can talk about withdrawing from some other sections of this agreement. Just as we can talk about the severance of diplomatic relations over a certain period,” Lutsenko said.
