A traditional Ukrainian product - lard - has risen sharply in price (over the past four years by 220% in hryvnia) and has become more expensive than pork. The reason lies in the decline in domestic production in Ukraine. Now the agricultural superpower even buys lard from Poland and Germany.

By the way, this situation already happened in the 1990s, when people’s incomes fell sharply. Then, for some time, lard also sold at a higher price than meat, although it cannot be said that this was somehow influenced by imports - at that time, the former Soviet republic still had a fairly large number of pigs, and there were enough of its own products. By the way, as in the case of oil, where there is Brent and WTI, the encodings of the two main types of lard show different dynamics: the price of salted lard has risen sharply, but not so much for homemade lard. So, if on September 1 salted lard cost 145 UAH per kg, then on November 1 it was already 190 UAH per kg. Homemade lard rose in price during this period, respectively, from 132 to 137 UAH per kg.

In retail chains, prices also differ. The most expensive lard is sold in the Novus chain (Homemade lard - 219 UAH per kg, salted lard - 139 UAH per kg) and Megamarket (Homemade lard - 159 UAH per kg). Salted lard is a little cheaper in Metro (184 UAH per kg), even cheaper in Auchan (175 UAH per kg).
