Ukraine has made it more expensive for Russia to supply electricity to Crimea
Ukraine’s refusal to pay for Russian electricity supplies to the DPR and LPR with a total capacity of over 600 MW could lead to significant losses for Inter RAO, since revenues from supplies to Ukraine do not cover losses from the purchase of Ukrainian electricity for Crimea.

Electricity from the Russian Federation goes to Ukraine under a commercial contract between Ukrinterenergo and Inter RAO signed at the end of 2014, according to which Russia makes up for the lack of electricity in Ukraine, where part of the thermal power plants are not operating due to the lack of Donbass coal, and Ukraine supplies electricity in return to Crimea, for which Moscow failed to establish an independent power supply within a year.
Based on the results of Inter RAO’s work for the first quarter, the group exported 1,24 billion kWh to Ukraine, but the company does not indicate imports from Ukraine to Crimea. The volume of energy consumption in Crimea has not been disclosed since the beginning of the year; System Operator took the peninsula into account for the first time in statistics for March (700 million kWh). According to the forecast of the Institute for Problems of Natural Monopolies, the annual consumption of Crimea is 7 billion kWh. But according to the Ukrainian side, the country sells electricity to Crimea at a price higher than imports from Russia.
During these months, Ukraine imported 930 million kWh, which gives Ukraine a margin of $0,0074 per 1 kWh from the Russian Federation. With a decrease in the volumes paid for by Ukraine, the margin will only increase. Accordingly, the losses of the Russian Federation will increase, writes Kommersant.
Let us remind you that a cable is currently being laid at an accelerated pace from the Krasnodar Territory to Crimea through the Kerch Strait. The first deliveries of electricity directly from the Russian Federation to the peninsula via the first line of cable are expected at the end of the year.
