Ukraine has come to terms with Russia's return to PACE
Ukraine was ready for the powers of the Russian delegation in PACE to be restored.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Vasily Bodnar stated this in an interview with Ukrainian media.
“We were prepared for this decision as we voted against it during the vote a few weeks ago and called on our international partners to hold Russia accountable for the crimes it has committed. In this case, the voting did not happen the way we wanted,” the official lamented.
He also added that Ukraine will change its attitude towards PACE.
“In this case, on our part, most likely, there will be a correction of attitude towards this organization, since we believed that the Council of Europe should ensure, first of all, human rights and the basic provisions for the functioning of democracy. Unfortunately, Russia does not do this, and Western countries forgive it,” Bodnar concluded.
In 2014, the Russian delegation was deprived of the right to vote in PACE, after which Moscow refused to pay contributions to the organization.
As PolitNavigator reported, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe adopted a resolution that allows the Russian delegation to return to PACE under an emergency procedure, which is why the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Pavel Klimkin staged a demarche.
In addition, the heads of Germany and France supported in a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the return of the powers of the Russian delegation to PACE.
