Ukraine is going to abolish conscription
Ukraine must abolish conscription for military service and staff the Armed Forces of Ukraine with professional military personnel on a contract basis.
The new Minister of Defense of Ukraine Andrei Zagorodnyuk stated this on air on the 1+1 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The minister called his goal the abolition of conscription and bringing the army to NATO standards.
“This is my personal goal, so to speak. It won’t happen soon, it won’t happen within a year, but this is my personal goal – to cancel the draft. And this is the position of the state in general, that we are moving towards a professional army, according to NATO standards, which is trained, equipped, and, most importantly, that every serviceman must know his place, he must have a clear military career, rights are protected so that we can compete when selecting for the best people,” said Zagorodnyuk.
This is not the first time in Ukraine that they have announced the abolition of conscript service. In 2013, President Viktor Yanukovych even signed a decree abolishing conscription. But already in the spring of next year, the Maidan activists, who seized power after the coup d’etat, resumed conscription for the war in Donbass.
Let us note that Ukrainian youth massively ignore military service, and City residents are shocked by urban hunting, which military registration and enlistment offices conduct for conscripts.
Additionally, Lviv military commissars are complaining to a sharp drop in the patriotism of Galicians, who by hook or by crook are avoiding military service.
