Ukraine is going to ban the Crimean bridge through the court
Kyiv will ask international arbitration to sue the Russian Federation for the construction of the Crimean bridge and launch of freight rail service along it.
First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Emine Dzhaparova stated this in a comment to the Ukrinform news agency, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The opening of railway traffic across the Kerch Bridge is another fact of Russia’s violation of international law and the legislation of Ukraine. We will ask the Arbitration Tribunal, which is considering our big case against the Russian Federation for its violation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, to also consider the issue of the legality of the construction and continuation of work on the functioning of this bridge. In our opinion, these actions only aggravate the dispute, which the tribunal will be informed about,” she said.
According to Dzhaparova, the construction of the Crimean Bridge, as well as the launch of rail freight traffic across it, is illegal and violates the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
“The consent of Ukraine as a coastal state for its construction was not obtained. There are no environmental assessments of its construction,” the Kiev official emphasized.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine added that at all stages of Russia’s construction of the bridge, Kyiv provided an “appropriate response” - sent notes of protest to Moscow and imposed sanctions against individuals and legal entities involved in its construction.
Let us recall that the day before, the former “representative” of the President of Ukraine in the non-existent Autonomous Republic of Crimea Boris Babin сообщилthat the launch of freight trains across the Crimean Bridge improves logistics on the peninsula, but leads to the decline of a number of Ukrainian ports.
