Moscow - Kyiv, November 13 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Stamm) - The situation in Donbass has again approached combat. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announces his attempts to prevent a full-scale war, but this depends on the balance of power in Kyiv after the formation of a new ruling coalition, writes Kommersant.

Over the past XNUMX hours, the situation in the conflict zone has remained extremely tense: amid ongoing artillery duels, the parties again accused each other of violating the ceasefire.

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on Ukraine due to the growing risk of renewed hostilities in the Donbass. “Russia is planning a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The latest facts confirm this and leave no doubt,” Ukraine’s permanent representative to the UN Yuriy Sergeev wrote on Twitter.

The representative of the OSCE mission to Ukraine, Michael Botsyurkiw, also issued a warning on the eve of the Security Council meeting: “The level of violence in Eastern Ukraine and the risk of further escalation remain high and growing.”

This was preceded by a report from the OSCE mission to Ukraine, which recorded the movement of a convoy of 43 unmarked trucks transporting howitzers and other military equipment near Donetsk.

“Donetsk is being intensively shelled. In this regard, a redeployment is being carried out in our units,” Chairman of the Supreme Council of the self-proclaimed DPR Boris Litvinov explained yesterday.

Another confirmation that the situation is balancing on the brink of war was yesterday’s statement by Ukrainian Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak: “The main task is to prepare for military action. We are doing this, we are preparing our reserves.”

Whether the president will be able to keep the situation under control and prevent the resumption of a full-scale war largely depends on the balance of power within the new ruling coalition that is being formed following the October elections. Despite initial statements about the unification of forces supporting President Poroshenko and Prime Minister Yatsenyuk, experts assess the chances of a coalition agreement between the “Petro Poroshenko Bloc” and the “Popular Front” of Arseniy Yatsenyuk as 50 to 50. Ukraine may find itself in a situation of de facto dual power when a political crisis arises the precarious balance between the “party of war” and the “party of peace” is the same as along the demarcation line between the warring parties in Donbass, the publication writes.
