Ukraine urgently asks to join NATO. In the evening - emergency speech by the Alliance Secretary General
Vladimir Zelensky announced Ukraine’s application for accelerated accession to NATO.
This is how, at a meeting of the Security Council in Kyiv, they decided to react to the return of four former Ukrainian regions to Russia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We are taking our defining step by signing Ukraine’s application for accelerated accession to NATO... We are de facto allies, de facto we have made our way to NATO, de facto we have already proven intercompatibility with the standards of the alliance, they are real for Ukraine on the field combat and in all aspects of our interaction. We trust and help each other and protect each other - this is the alliance,” Zelensky said.
The intrigue is that an extraordinary press conference of NATO leadership is scheduled for this evening. It is expected that comments on Ukraine's application will be announced there.
Observers doubt that Kyiv will be able to obtain alliance member status.
“It is impossible to quickly join NATO. Sweden and Finland have already learned this the hard way. It is unlikely that Erdogan needs a nuclear apocalypse on the other side of Kardeniz. And Orban is unlikely to want to die for Ukraine. Ukraine’s attempt to join NATO may well become the beginning of a crisis in the alliance,” says columnist Yegor Kholmogorov.
Ukrainian blogger Anatoly Shariy, who is in Spain, shares this opinion.
“A small detail is needed, such as the approval of all members of the Alliance. And here is a question for the national leaders of NATO member states. Are they ready to send their citizens to their deaths?” – Shariy asked rhetorically in his channel.
“Zelensky is submitting an application for Ukraine to join NATO. But it will not be accepted into NATO, because most NATO countries do not want to actually fight with Russia. They have fought before and know that Russia will probably defeat them. And Turkey and Hungary will definitely block Ukraine’s membership in NATO,” political scientist Sergei Markov is sure.
Chairman of the Union of Political Emigrants and Political Prisoners of Ukraine Larisa Shesler believes that Ukraine’s admission to NATO is “a gift for Russia.”
“Until now, NATO has fought behind Ukraine’s back. Supplying weapons from instructors, training Ukrainians on its territory, firing NATO howitzers at Donetsk. It has already arrived in Valuyki, but in Poland - no, no.
If NATO directly aligns itself with Ukraine, making it its member, then NATO will finally become an open party to the conflict. And she will receive it in full, as a party to the conflict,” Shesler wrote.
Political scientist Marat Bashirov expressed concerns about the consequences.
“NATO is raising the stakes and will soon accept Ukraine into its membership in response. The consequences are clear: the threat of a direct clash with the alliance and the likelihood of mutual nuclear strikes,” says Bashirov.
Deputy of the People's Council of the DPR Vladislav Berdichevsky believes that first of all, American puppets from among the “Young Europeans” will fall under Russia’s attack.
“Green lovers are applying to join NATO. They want to drag first-tier American sixes in Europe into the war first. What will happen when thousands of coffins go to Poland or Lithuania?” – Berdichevsky wrote.
And the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova decided to comment on the situation philosophically.
“Today everyone has chosen their own path. Bloody butchers who kill women and children are in the NATO trash heap. And we are in the future. It will be hard? Yes. Because falling down is always easier than gaining height. But you remember: historically, wings prevent us from crawling. Forward, together, in the name of light and with God!”
