Ukraine has become a cyber testing ground for Russia, which is preparing to attack the West – Ukrainian media
“Hackers associated with Russia have turned Ukraine into a testing ground for cyber weapons, which the Kremlin is ready to use in the future against much more formidable opponents - the United States and the EU,” claims the Kiev magazine “Novoe Vremya” in a publication dedicated to the recent cyber attack that paralyzed the servers of a number of government and corporate Ukrainian networks.

According to the head of the Ukrainian company ISSP Labs, Alexey Yasinsky, quoted by the magazine, Ukraine became a testing ground for hackers who supposedly had the opportunity to achieve truly destructive, irreversible consequences, but “they retreated every time, as if during an exercise.”
In turn, American journalist Andy Greenberg, presented in the publication as an expert, says that Russia is installing digital bombs both in Ukraine and in the West.
“Russia is using Ukraine as a testing ground, a laboratory to improve new ways of waging global online warfare. And the digital bombs that Russia has repeatedly planted in Ukraine are the same ones that have been planted at least once on U.S. civilian infrastructure,” Greenberg argues.
Referring to the opinion of American cybersecurity expert Robert E. Lee, the publication points out that for Russian hackers, the United States can present an even more convenient set of targets than Ukraine.
“Taking into account all the factors, some international analysts in the field of cybersecurity come to the conclusion: by being active in Ukraine, Russia is not only testing new types of electronic warfare weapons, but also demonstrating its capabilities to Western opponents. This, they say, is a kind of warning for the United States and its allies: we can respond to any of your actions with a sudden and destructive online assault,” writes the Ukrainian magazine.
Let us note that the material contains the names of a number of hacker groups (CyberBerkut, SandWorm, APT29, Tsar’s Team), but no convincing evidence of their connection with the Kremlin is provided, other than essentially unfounded allegations.
In addition, the technical director of the Ukrainian antivirus manufacturer Zillya! Oleg Sych says that “Russians may well be assisted by hackers of the self-proclaimed “DPR” and “LPR.”
