Ukraine is followed by Bulgaria (118), Belarus (100) and Russia (98).
In China, for example, this figure is 76 people per 100 thousand.
The number of deaths caused by air pollution in Ukraine is four times higher than in the five cleanest countries in the world (Iceland, Finland, Liberia, Canada, Vanuatu) combined.
The World Health Organization released a report showing that 92% of the world's inhabitants (nine out of ten) breathe polluted air. The WHO data was compiled using satellite imagery as well as air samples that were collected from more than 3000 areas around the world.
According to Maria Neira, director of the WHO Department of Public Health and Environment, the new data is enough to make “we are all very worried.” “This is a public health emergency,” she stressed.
Experts warn that while the problem of air pollution is worse in cities, the air in rural areas is much dirtier than many people think.
The situation is worst in Southeast Asia and the western Pacific region - including China, Malaysia and Vietnam. On average, more than three million people die from air pollution worldwide each year. According to the organization, every ninth death in the world is associated with air pollution, including indoors. The largest number of deaths (more than a million per year) is recorded in China. The second and third places are occupied, respectively, by India (620 thousand) and Russia (more than 140 thousand).
