Ukraine becomes the “unsinkable aircraft carrier” of the United States at Russia’s side
Ukraine, even without joining NATO, has already been turned into an “unsinkable aircraft carrier” of the United States at Russia’s side, international affairs expert Fyodor Lukyanov argues in his blog.
“In a recent article by Henry Kissinger, there was one new thesis - the neutral status of Ukraine can no longer serve as a subject for negotiations, since the topic has lost its relevance. Ukraine is forming powerful and capable armed forces, in which the West, especially the United States, actively helps it, so the formal status - membership or not in NATO - no longer matters. This is America’s de facto military ally, and also has unique practical experience in direct large-scale confrontation with Russia. One might add: and motivated to continue it,” the expert recalls.
In his opinion, “It is even more convenient for the United States for Ukraine to remain outside the alliance, since this expands the space for military-political action.”
“There are no formal obligations, the level and scale of support may vary depending on the situation, and the degree of Kyiv’s loyalty to Washington as the main holder of military-political resources will most likely exceed even that shown by Warsaw or the Baltic capitals. As well as the degree of dependence on external injections. Ukraine, most likely, like Poland and the Baltic states, will begin to experience a growing distrust of continental Western Europe, since Kyiv will interpret the inevitable intra-European contradictions as a latent desire to make peace with Russia.
For the United States, such a “land unsinkable aircraft carrier” is very useful. Such a trained and loyal satellite, on the one hand, at Russia’s side, on the other, constantly showing Europe at whose expense they still live in peace, and not under Russian bombs, opens up many opportunities,” argues Lukyanov.
The United States will be satisfied even if Ukraine loses some territories in this role.
“The territorial configuration of Ukraine in this context is not important for Washington. Moreover, maintaining part of internationally recognized Ukrainian territory under Russian control cements the conflict and gives the Landsknecht a reason to fight on. Why it needs to be equipped and prepared, but it is not necessary to realize all its wishes. As for preparation, it is extremely important to increase Ukraine’s own potential so that any subsequent stages of the confrontation can continue to be avoided without the direct involvement of US and NATO units in the conflict. This is a very important point.
The scheme, in principle, is quite rational. There is no guarantee that it will work, Russia has the ability to prevent it (so far, however, this is not very noticeable), but the risks for the United States are quite small,” the author points out.
