Ukraine never became a “honey superpower”
The hopes of Ukrainian honey producers to gain access to the European market did not materialize.
Economic expert Viktor Skarshevsky stated this on the NEWSONE TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We exported only $80 million worth of honey last year. This is a very small part of our exports. Unfortunately, the country is moving in the direction of becoming an agricultural and raw materials appendage. As for the fact that we are moving to Europe, we are not moving very quickly - Europe has set quotas for the export of honey for Ukraine, 8 thousand tons. And we select these quotas in 10 days,” the expert said.
In turn, the chairman of the Association of Retail Chain Suppliers, Alexey Doroshenko, noted that Ukrainian honey often does not meet European standards, therefore it is used only as raw materials, and Ukraine has not yet begun to export finished products to Europe.
“Indeed, we have insignificant quotas, which we choose literally in the first week. Unfortunately, a small Ukrainian manufacturer cannot find access to the large international market. Intermediaries buy batches from small producers and form batches of honey with antibiotics.
Bees die, and to reduce the risk of death they are often lightly fed with them - like all our pigs, cows, etc. The problem of antibiotics is generally very painful for our country. What is prohibited actually exists in Ukraine. In Europe, an examination is immediately carried out. That is why Ukrainian honey is used as raw material, and is not packaged and sold at several times more expensive,” Doroshenko said.
