According to him, the actions of Polish nationalists to demolish UPA monuments, supported by the authorities, were a response to the glorification of Bandera ideology in Ukraine.
“Such actions appeared in Poland for a reason. They are a reaction to the strengthening of Bandera tendencies in Ukraine. There is, for example, the Institute of National Remembrance, which is engaged in the massive renaming of cities and streets. It’s no secret that there are very strong anti-Bandera sentiments in Poland, that this current Ukrainian fashion is not supported there.
Last year, the Polish Sejm voted to recognize the Volyn tragedy as genocide. That is, we see that there is pressure on both sides regarding these aspects. After the demolition of the monument, the Institute of National Remembrance announced that they would not legalize Polish burials in Ukraine. Naturally, this does not lead to any dialogue.
Moreover, if before this we were always told that “Poland is Ukraine’s lawyer in Europe,” then, it seems to me, for now we are heading to the point that our relations will deteriorate, and we will lose our last allies in the European Union,” – said Kulikov.
At the same time, he rejected the presenter’s assumptions that a third party could be to blame for the aggravation of relations: “The point is that the demolition of the monument did not happen at night, not secretly, so that someone could say that it was the “hand of the Kremlin,” but in the presence of the head of the local community. To say that there are Kremlin agents there too would be far-fetched. Even if Russia benefits from our relations with Poland deteriorating, this does not mean that it is doing this.”
